Background

The Somali Relief Network of North America (SRNNA) for Environment, Education and Health was founded in 1995 as a non-profit organization dedicated to the development of solutions to issues faced in under-served and marginalized Somalia communities. Since 1995, SRNNA has grown from a humble beginning of working in a single office room donated by another local NGO to far-fledged organization with interventions all over Somalia. The staff, once composed of just a director and five volunteer social workers now has over 114 members in four departments: Environment, education, health, and income generation are the driving focus of the SRNNA.

Objectives:

  • Working towards the improvement of the environmental situation of the country.
  • Advancing education by the provision of facilities for schooling and other learning opportunities as well as vocational training skills for the widows, youth, IDPs, disabled and orphans.
  • Improving the income of pastoralists and agro-pastoralists by helping them through income generation/diversification activities.
  • Awareness rising on implications of FGM/C, HIV/AIDs, and promotion programs women’s reproductive health.
  • Respond to humanitarian needs of affected communities during disasters.
  • Promote and assist in the integration of immigrants into Canadian society as contributing citizens.
  • Assist in and to co-ordinate the provisions of social services to those immigrants in need.
  • Arrange engagement activities between vulnerable groups to build peer relationships.
  • Serve with free of cost initiatives through consistent approach to relief and empowerment.
  • Organize education activities, lectures, symposiums, conferences, to promote cultural heritage.
  • Relief poverty through raising awareness, funds, grassroots support, and networking.

Our Aim:

  • With the advent of crime, drugs and an increase in high-school dropout rates affecting many within our community, we strive to provide local program to support grassroots needs
  • Providing strong solutions through networking, bonding, and solution-oriented initiatives. We aim to achieve this goal by providing various social services, facilitating health and fitness activities and building strong youth and families through education serving the diverse immigrant families coming from South Asia, Bangladesh, Somalia, Syria and other places around the globe.

Main financial resources:

SRNNA has various forms such as holding fundraising dinners at high capacity in banquet halls, hotels, universities halls and religious places such as churches, mosques synagogues, and gurdwaras. Moreover, we used to have BBQ gatherings and door to door knocking in neighborhoods of potential donors. All the above are activities have been completely shut down since COVID-19 has hit us all. Therefore, majority services that Somali Relief Network regularly provides either have been interrupted or temporarily stopped.
